GARDENERS...PLEASE HELP PREVENT THE SPREAD OF BLIGHT Posted on: 2012-08-13
Please help our agricultural neighbours by helping to prevent the spread of blight by properly disposing of plants infected by this disease.
PROPER DISPOSAL:
Preferred Method: Plants should be completely removed from your garden and destroyed by burying them or by placing them in a plastic bag. The bag must be tied tightly and placed in the sunlight to allow the plants to completely break down. Once the plant is completely dead, the bag may be emptied into the compost cart. The soiled plastic bag must be placed into the waste cart. Handle the plants as little as possible to prevent the spores from travelling in the wind.
Acceptable Method: Plants may be immediately placed into paper yard and garden bags. The bag should be folded down and secured with masking tape to prevent the wind from blowing the bag open. If room permits, the bag may be placed into the compost cart. Up to two additional bags will be collected each compost week if placed beside the compost cart. Please do not place plants directly into the compost cart if infected with blight and not completely dead.
